Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC) today congratulates Ben Carroll on his appointment as Victorian Premier, and thanks Jacinta Allan for her impressive contribution as only the second woman to serve as Victoria’s Premier.
GEN VIC CEO Micaela Drieberg said: “We thank Jacinta Allan for her contribution and congratulate her on her achievements in reaching gender parity in Victorian politics, her advocacy for women’s health by introducing the Women’s Pain inquiry, and her willingness to call out the sexism she has personally faced in public life.”
“From becoming the youngest woman ever elected to the Victorian Parliament, to serving as Victoria’s second female Premier, Ms Allan has helped pave the way for future generations. Her final message reassuring women not to be discouraged by the sexism she has faced, but instead to see the impact they can make through public leadership, is a powerful legacy for the next generation.”
GEN VIC congratulates Gabrielle Williams on her appointment to Deputy Premier, and welcomes the continued representation of women in senior levels of Victorian political leadership.
We also acknowledge Ben Carroll’s ongoing advocacy for equal parenting and the role education settings play in advancing gender equity. We look forward to continuing to work with the Victorian Government to build on our progress towards a more equitable future of all Victorians.
With the election fast approaching, GEN VIC is calling on all parties to make gender equity a priority; not only through policy commitments, but through the representation of women in leadership, candidate selection and decision-making roles.
