Gender Equity Victoria strongly supports the recommendations from the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee’s Inquiry into Gender Responsive Budgeting.
Gender Equity Victoria welcomes the strengthening of Gender Responsive Budgeting within Treasury, which will ensure a gender lens is put on all budget decisions. We particularly welcome the recommendation to explore the establishment of a Gender Equity Budget Group of gender economic experts, civil society organisations, business and unions to inform the development of Gender Responsive Budgeting in Victoria. This has been a long held advocacy position of GENVIC.
“Gender Responsive Budgeting measures are critically important to achieving gender equity, promoting transparency and accountability for spending within governments. We welcome recommendations that the Government should draw on a diverse range of perspectives, including the wealth of knowledge and expertise of gender economists in Victoria and across the country. We look forward to contributing our expertise to gender equitable budgeting measures”, said Tanja Kovac, CEO Gender Equity Victoria.
“Gender Responsive Budgeting is essential to ensure women benefit from budgeting decisions. Advocating for Gender Responsive Budgeting has been core part of GEN VIC’s focus areas to improve gender economic equity and justice, especially during recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We know the powerful and positive impact Gender Responsive Budgeting can have on women’s lives” said Ms Kovac.
“We’re hopeful all 23 recommendations from the report will be implemented in the upcoming 2022-20223 budget. This report represents an important milestone in the step towards gender equality in Victoria. We look forward to working with Government on the implementation of these recommendations.”
