Gender Equity Victoria calls for removal of outdated clothing

Gender Equity Victoria is deeply disappointed to see the sale of clothing that reinforces outdated and harmful gender stereotypes.

On 17 June, The Age published an article where Dr Cathy Foley, president of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering. calls out retailer Myer’s decision to sell a women’s T-shirt by Australian label Lioness, emblazoned with the words, “I’m too pretty to do math”.

In response to the article, GEN VIC CEO Micaela Drieberg said “Slogans like this aren’t harmless, they reinforce stereotypes that undermine the value and potential of women and girls. At GEN VIC we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive on a level playing field. Challenging gender stereotypes is a critical part of creating a fairer, safer and more inclusive society, one where people are recognised for their skills and contributions, not reduced to outdated ideas about gender.”

Thanks for calling this out Cathy Foley and Bridie Smith.
