Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC) today welcomed the appointment of Gabrille Williams as Victoria’s new Minister for Women and Girls, while acknowledging the significant contributions of outgoing Minister Mary-Anne Thomas to gender equality in Victoria.

As Minister for Women, Minister Thomas championed landmark reforms that have made a lasting difference to the lives of Victorian women. Her tenure saw the establishment of 20 women’s health clinics, the launch of Victoria’s first public fertility care service and a world-leading pain inquiry that put women’s health on the national agenda. She also oversaw expanded access to contraception and abortion care and took meaningful steps to reform Victoria’s Voluntary Assisted Dying laws.

Micaela Drieberg, CEO of Gender Equity Victoria, said Minister Thomas had been a genuine champion for women during a time when women’s rights are under increasing pressure.

“Minister Thomas leaves an impressive legacy of reform for Victorian women. At a time when women’s rights face challenges from conservative forces globally, she delivered concrete, structural change – from women’s health clinics through to expanded reproductive rights and pain care,” said Ms Drieberg.

“We look forward to working with Gabrille Williams (again!) and building on this strong foundation. There is still much to do to achieve gender equality in Victoria, and we are committed to working closely with Minister Williams to progress the agenda for all Victorians,” she added.
